Colorectal cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum. It usually begins as an abnormal growth, called a polyp, that forms in the colon or rectum.

Colorectal Cancer in Young Adults
Diagnosis of colorectal cancer in young adults is on the rise. This is known as early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in the medical community, and it refers to people under age 50 facing the disease. At UT Southwestern, we have a team that specializes in the care of young adults. They ensure every patient receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs.
Services We Provide for Colorectal Cancer Patients
At UT Southwestern, our multidisciplinary specialists use the latest techniques and research to create individualized treatment plans for patients with colorectal cancer. Our team has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgical techniques that reduce recovery time. Our program includes:
- Screening and diagnosis through colonoscopy, a procedure that uses a flexible tube to examine the entire colon
- Virtual colonoscopy, which is less invasive than conventional colonoscopy, and fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs), which look for hidden blood in stool
- Expert delivery of the most advanced medical and surgical therapies available for colorectal cancer
- Integrative therapies, nutrition counseling, and other support services for patients and their families
As a medical research institution, we offer access to clinical trials, giving our patients the opportunity to try the newest treatments for colorectal cancer not available elsewhere.
